Is looked down upon to transfer schools?

I currently go to a state school in the same city I graduated high school in. At the end of this year, I will have 3 semesters completed at this school. I would really like to transfer to a private school far from where I am now. But I feel like I would look better if I completed all my undergrad at one school. As a transfer student can I still live on campus and participate in there study abroad program and really have the college experience or will i feel left out and behind?

Nono, it won’t matter if you transfer–and if you transfer to a better school than the one you are at, future employers will be impressed by your initiative.

TONS of people transfer…of COURSE you can still live in campus and participate in everything. Transfer students are just regular students–and anyway, at college everyone is always coming and going (taking a semester off to travel, going abroad, being admitted in the spring, etc.), so a new face isn’t really a big deal.

Some schools try really hard to make transfers feel good…my friend transferred to Northwestern, and she lived in a dorm that was specifically for transfer students.

Since you’re pretty far along in your college career, you might have to work a little bit to infiltrate the cliques and stuff, but just be friendly and join clubs and stuff and it shouldn’t be very hard.

Yes, you can transfer. If you transfer to a better school, no one will frown upon your decision. If, however, you transfer schools repeatedly, then that would not be viewed highly. You are early enough in your degree that transferring should not create major problems with credits and delay your graduation. I would not wait past your second year.

I transferred 2nd semester and there were no problems making friends and getting involved in the school. There were many people who had transferred midway through the year and we went through orientation together and hung out in the dorms before the returning students arrived on campus from Christmas break.
