Is it worth a W or C?

i am enrolled in a community college. transfer to UCLA and eventually med. school. Major: biology. so im taking this Math 261 course, and the teacher sucks. now im looking into getting a C. ive had a 4.0 till now. if i drop i plan on retaking it getting a A. if i were to get a W, will this affect me in ANY way possible towards undergrad. at UCLA or even med. school? or should i take the C???

For most colleges and universities, a withdrawal grade or a “W” grade is better on your transcript since it does not affect your GPA. However if your admission to UCLA is contingent on passing Math 261, you may want to reconsider on dropping the class. Is it possible for you to meet with the professor to see what you need to do in order to earn an “A” in the class?

Keep in mind that too many “W” grades don’t look favorably on your transcript. It’s not too bad if you withdraw then re-take the course for a letter grade.

One more thing to keep in mind, watch your course deadline dates. Colleges and universities often set academic calendar dates for each course. This means that there is a deadline for everything such as: “Last day to register”, “Last day to drop”, “Last day to change grading option”, or “Last day to withdraw”.

Also, talk to your academic adviser to see what impact a “C” or a “W” will have on your transcript.

Best wishes!

I would advise withdrawing if you still can. Then you can take the class again and the W will be replaced with the new grade. If you take the C you can always use a repeat option, but remember you are limited to the number you can take as a repeat. I think it is 3 or at lest it was for me where I went to school. The thing is if you take the C and then do a repeat it may still appear on your transcript when you apply for med school. I know that with some colleges even if you declare academic bankruptcy and then get a 4.0 and apply for law school or med school they still will view your old transcriptt. The same with a repeat option it still weighs in on your over all transcrip even if you have retaken it. So that is why I say take the W it is no grade and is OK if you only have one or two on there. Then you can take it again and get an A. You should keep your 4.0 at all cost if you intend to apply for med school.

i would say get a c, b/c i hear a w is bad on your transcript…but if you choose a w, make sure you explain why, to the medical admission committee, you got a w. then retake the math, get an a and your gpa would still be the same… remember that the w is still going to be there in your transcript, as the grade c….those do not get deleted ever from your transcript…good luck!
