It all depends on the field you are going in and what college you are going to. Colleges have different requirements depending on what field you are planning on going into. You’ll need to get information from the college you want to attend (or colleges, if you’re not sure which one exactly) and see what they specifically say.

It also depends on what state you are in and their requirements for graduation. Some states require all students to have a certain amount of a foreign language. Other states require it for a specific type of diploma. A high school guidance counselor can give you this information.

I’m sorry you dislike the language you are taking so much that you don’t want to take a third year. It’s unfortunate that most high schools make the classes difficult by focusing mainly on grammar (memorizing verb conjugations and rules) instead of concentrating on fluency (being able to actually communicate in the language).

While it might be “possible” to do something, it might not be the best course of action. Taking one more year of a language might give you that little “edge” you need when you are looking for a job. Many jobs these days are international (especially with Mexico and France) and having a better grasp of either of these languages can give you a boost up in the job market. It also might give you an advantage when applying to colleges as well.

Most major grammatical points are covered in the first two years (in a traditional class) so the third year has a lot of review time and practical application in it. (It might not be as bad as you might think it is.)

Colleges are beginning to see the necessity for their students to have a good foundation in a second language. One more year of it might be a good investment in your future. I’ve met many of my former students who have said “I wish I would have taken more French/Spanish” but I’ve never met one who said, “I wish I’d never taken that third year of French/Spanish.”

getting your advanced diploma in HS has nothing to do with getting into college. All colleges care about is that you graduated (or have a GED) and can do well on a standardized exam like the SAT or ACT. I have a “advanced diploma” from high school and it has never made a difference.. in fact, no one has EVER asked me. I know right now you think it will matter in the future, but it most likely won’t. If you are seriously worried about it, check the school you want to go to (and your plan b school) to make sure they don’t require 3 years of for. lang. If they don’t care then drop the 3rd year language class and enjoy your senior year.

You should be able to get into most colleges as long as you have a high GPA and test scores, but most colleges will make you take at least 1 year of foreign language classes there as a graduation requirement
