Is it necessary or recommended to have a prior business background to get into a top tier mba program?

I am in my mid 30’s and considering a career change. I have spent most of my professional life in non-profit management and am seeking change.

As some of the folks in my professional associations are fond of saying, “nonprofit is just a tax designation.” Presumably you’ve shown enough increased responsibility in your employment to be qualified in terms of experience, and you bring a different perspective that could be attractive to schools.

If you’re worried about a lack of academic background in business, you may want to consider taking some community college/continuing education courses on your own to fill in glaring gaps, but a strong GMAT (particularly in the quantitative section) and extensive work experience will compensate for a lot.

Gettinga second bachelor would not help you much. in addition, many excellent universities (i.e. UCLA, Stanford, Berkeley, U Chicago, Columbia, U Michigan) would NOT accept people that already have a bachelors degree. There are a few exceptions to this rule, but its almost universal that even if they accept you, there wont be ANY financial aid. Unless you are excetional good at something, they are not going to tkae you, no matter what. Your best bet would be 1) Go to a master programs and ace (consider wheter it would be close to MBA i.e. Finance or not) 2) Start working for a few years and rise QUICKLY on the ranks, then apply. Sorry, I cannot see anothe r way
