Is amazon.com a good place to find textbook for college?

I’m a college freshman and i’m trying to find the best place to buy textbooks for a lower price. I was wondering if anyone has ordered a book from Amazon.com and got what they were expecting. I’ve never ordered a book from online and i want to make sure i get what i order. Thanks alot for your help.

Yes, amazon.com is a pretty good place to buy textbooks. I’ve ordered there a few times and always gotten what I expected. The only downfall to Amazon.com is that sometimes the prices are a bit higher.

Bigwords.com is the way to go! They search a BUNCH of different online sites (including Amazon.com and Half.com) for the cheapest price on your books. Then, it adds on the price of shipping and shows you where your book will be the cheapest. You can also change your options to look for international editions or electronic versions or to get your book shipped faster.

Also, don’t fret about ordering online. Just make sure the ISBN number on the book you order matches the one you need. You can email the seller, if needed.

If you’re buying the books for a class such as English or History, it is a good idea to buy them early (!) off amazon.com, since you will get free shipping and amazon usually packages these books together for a lower price, than what you’d pay at the campus bookstore.

Make sure you get the same versions as what everyone else will be using, or you will be flipping through the book like an idiot during discussions. Otherwise, you can look textbooks on amazon (and find deals like international versions of math and science texts, which are generally cheaper than the US versions).

Amazon.com is very good with shipments–generally cheaper than Borders (and they have a larger selection since it’s online distribution); however whether or not you save money on Amazon as opposed to buying from the campus bookstore is iffy. When you start the semester, professors may or may not change the textbooks they are using, you may or may not need the textbook immediately (overnight shipping from Amazon pretty much kills anything you’ve tried to save) so from my personal experience, you should only buy off Amazon when you know for sure what texts you are using (i.e., those core required classes everyone takes, those classes that everyone has the same text list for, like the intro lit survey-type classes).

Don’t buy used books off Amazon unless you are saving a lot, shipping prices can run quite expensive.

Also, a lot of colleges have internet networks like www.dogears.net which allows students to post texts, often for a lower price, to other students. You can usually save a bundle of cash that way–the only problem is with version inconsistencies, so make sure you’re getting a right text!

Once or twice, I found good deals on amazon for books.

The only thing I’d caution you about is checking the edition of the textbook. Sometimes they sell the older editions on amazon and your professor wants you to have the newest edition.

Mostly I used amazon for selling old textbooks. My local bookstore would sometimes offer like $10 to buy back a book that I had bought for almost $100 because the publisher had just come out with a new edition and they wouldn’t be selling the old edition next semester. In cases like that, I would post that book on amazon and get a good bit on money for it because there would be plenty of professors out there at different colleges that would still use the old edition in their upcoming classes.

It can work out great and I’ve saved a lot of money this way. However, do watch if you are ordering from other “affiliated” sellers. I ordered from the lowest price seller on half.com a year ago and got screwed—never received 3 of my books, all from sellers with ratings under 10. Fortunately half.com refunded my money. Since then, I only buy from sellers who have over 1,000 positive reviews.

Also, be aware that the standard shipping can take up to 3 weeks, so don’t buy any books you need right now at standard shipping.

My son needed AP bio textbook and macroeconomics text book as weel as other books for AP bio and 2 soft covered reading books.. After doing much searching, bidding on the text books on Ebay and trying other sites, I orderd them all through Amazon. They all came as described (the ap bio textbook I ordered new and it was much cheaper). They had used ones but figured since he is a senior in HS and needs it and will use it through college, I would get the new one..I was very happy with Amazon. If they are used, they will give the description of the condition and they are spot on.

I have found Amazon.com to be very useful. I havn’t used it too much to buy books but to sell them when the University only wants to give you back $4 for a $50 book or not take it back at all because they won’t be using it next semester. Hope this helps!

Best of Luck!

amazon can be good a place for textbooks (as i have a prime account with them as well). However, you will not always save money with them. A few times, it actually cost more from them then my bookstore. Just make sure to get your school’s prices first so you can compare.

The best website I found was http://www.addall.com/ because it compares prices at a variety of different sites including Amazon and half.com as well as many others. I have used this numerous times and have always been able to find much better deals that I ever would have found at the school’s bookstore.
