A degree indicates that you have a propensity for higher learning and critical thinking. A degree in music will help you in several fields initially, but may require additional education or training.

If your intent is performance, you will not need any additional education. If you plan to teach, you will either need to be certified or a masters degree.

Many computer programmers began their careers as music majors. There is a correlation between the music theory and programming theory. Companies such as Xerox and IBM in the 80s recruited heavily in the field of music for up and coming executives because of this.

So depending upon what you plan to do with the degree, it can prove to be valuable – contrary to what others have already posted.

It would be if you completed your degree in a certain track: music education and music therapy are two good options.

If you are going into music performance, you better be pretty dang good, ready for 6-8 hrs of daily practice, and going to a great school. I think you’ll figure this out right away, though.

That depends on how you term “valuable”.

If you mean priceless in the realm of spiritual development, becoming a well-rounded individual, and being a credit to the artist, then yes.

If you’re talking about getting a paying job, then probably no.

Depends on what you want to do after graduation. My suggestion would be to get a teaching degree with the music. (I know, I can hear the YUCK from here.) The reason is that teachers should be in demand for the foreseeable future.

It depends on what you’re going to do with it. More likely than not, it won’t be valuable at all. You’ll be more marketable than someone with no degree, but less marketable than almost everyone with a different degree.

I don’t really think so, unless you’re wealthy and never need to work. What kind of job(s) do you hope to acquire with this education? Sounds like a music teacher who wanted to be a muscian but didn’t succeed.
