International Studies vs. Communications major?

I haven’t declared my major yet, and until recently I had set my mind on International Studies. I now think I want to go into photojournalism, and I would have to major in Communications at my college. I would probably try to minor in the one I don’t major in, but what I want to know is which is a better major? What are the pros and cons of each one? What kind of career opportunities would I have after college? How difficult would it be to get a job with a magazine as a photojournalist? Thanks!

I started out as a Communications major because I wanted to be a journalist, but after one semester I switched to Political Science. I found that the Communications department was filled with a lot of “theory” classes like “Rhetoric” and “Intercultural Communications.” Political Science was just more interesting to me. But, I worked on the college newspaper for three years and became Editor in Chief. That was PRACTICAL experience rather than the THEORY taught in the Communications classes.

I think you should major in something you find interesting and get the work experience either through photojournalism on your school paper or internships (or better yet, both.)

Don’t feel that you have to major in Communications to “do” Communications later. Many if not most Journalists have academic backgrounds outside of Communications.

Do a double major in International Studies and Journalism. You can seriously get far in that. I didn’t get a double major, but I almost did. I majored in Psych. with a minor in Soc. All my electives were in Soc. because I loved it, but I was going to school full time and working full time. It just about killed me. I just finally had to take my degree and go before I was mental lol. But, a double major will be seen in a positive light. If your minor is in something just take all your electives in it and a few more courses…viola!
