The pins are numbered for specific heights and a random number generator is used to select pin heights. In automotive and certified licking systems the numbers are recorded.

I used to have a Curtis key book and could look up the number for any GM car and use the numbers to punch a new key. When I repossessed cars for Bank of America I used the numeric system whenever the bank could not provide a key.
