Architect education info?

My son wants to become an architect. I’m looking for any information on the educational requirements. What schools offer what he needs, how long it takes, if there are different types or levels of architects, the subjects you need to be strong in, including what he should be focused on now. He just entered junior high this year, so he still has a while to go, but he is VERY sure that this is what he wants to do with his life. We live close to Pittsburgh, PA & he would like to go to school somewhat close to home. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Have your son take a drafting class if that is available in junior high or high school. Besides that, he should be decent at math. Architect schools usually take 5 years. You can look at Carnegie Mellon in your area. They have a pretty decent Architecture program, but it has more emphasis on the arts. So if your son is artistic it would be helpful. Other schools may emphasis more on engineering. If that is the case your son would need to focus more on the maths and sciences.

Architecture varies from school to school. Some focus more on artistic merits and others more on the engineering merits. Find out your son’s strengths and weaknesses and apply accordingly.

Below is a link to Carnegie Mellon’s architect school for some info. Look around other colleges for their requirements.

Good luck.
