If you decide to minor in some field, is it as good as majoring?
Favorite Answer
If your intention is to become an accountant who happens to sing, then you really need to major in accounting and either minor in music or simply join the choir and take applied voice as electives.
The minor matters most when it can be applied somehow. A major in music with a minor in any business function can get you into an MBA program. Having an MBA and a music degree is a rare combination and has some value you can only imagine in the music industry.
If your intention is to perform, then it really does matter very little what you majored in. All that matters is whether you can perform. The music major simply provides you with some tools but it’s your talent that determines whether you can perform for a living.
On the other hand, if you’re a very talented singer, you may be able to get a job singing with just a minor in singing. They wouldn’t necessarily care what your degree says, they’d just audition you and your training and talent would show.
You’re probably best off switching (Acc. major w/singing minor or double major) unless you are seriously considering a career in music.
