Most MIS or CIS majors either are technical or more business focused. Here’s a tip: look up any major company like Home Depot and look up any jobs under IT. Then you’ll see the type of jobs for IT people.

Technical jobs include: programming, technical architects, database administrators, network adiministrators, help desk support. Non-technical or business focused jobs are project managers, business analysts, quality assurance testers…

Most CIS majors aren’t very technical so you’ll probably become a project manager, business analyst or QA tester. The mostly likely job right out of school is some sort of QA test job and then you can move over into business analyst work where you work with marketing or sales or finance or supply chain and gather system requirements.

Most likely start off with some kind of Help Desk Support, Call Center Support, IT Support, etc. You can get to alot of places, but just need experience. Having a degree doesn’t guarantee you a job, although it’s good to have. I’ve trained and interviewed a few university graduates, and they’re not better than the “poorer geek” with half a college diploma. It’s all about the hands-on knowledge and experience. Some people play with computers as a hobby, others just study book to get the degree and hopefully get a good starting job. So sad.
