To be any type of physician, you need to fulfill the pre-med requirements for medical school which are a combination of biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, math and physics. Many premeds then end up doing a science major (biology or chemistry) simply because with all the science requirements pre-meds had to take already, it’s the path of least resistance.

However, you don’t necessarily have to and I would almost encourage you not to. Definitely major in something you’re interested in; if you are a scientist at heart and want to major in biology, then great. If you want to be doctor but also have an interest in English literature and want to major in that, that’s fine too, and your application will also stand out among the others. I majored in music composition and I can’t express enough how much more enriched my college experience was because I chose to pursue that in addition to my medical school requirements. The best advice is to maximize your college experience to the fullest and not just view it as a stepping stone to medical school

Sarah, a gastroenterologist (note the “enter” part) would take every chemistry, biology, and anatomy class offered and make sure she aces them all, because getting into med school, those grades will be looked at more closely than how you did in Russian Lit or Ancient Philosophy classes.
