I need to know the best masters degree program I need to take?

I am in the army and will be for the next 4 years. when I get out I want to be able to become a high school teacher so I can become a football coach. I have an associates in applied science in telecommunications and a BS in information technology. I want to teach a 9th or 10th grade algebra class or a computer course. does anyone have any good ideas or guidance? I dont have a lot of time, so I will most likely have to go to the university of phoenix. which is where i got my BSIT. When I get out i will probably end up moving back to oklahoma city or one of the suburbs there. I have looked through the courses that UOP offer and I am not sure which course to take. my options at UOP are MA education curriculum and instruction computer specialization, curriculum and instruction, secondary teacher education and administration and supervision. what do you think?

With your BS in information technology, you could possibly get an alternative certification, but that would depend on which state you land in. You can also go for a masters in math. Because of the No Child Left Behind law, you must be ‘highly qualified’ to teach the subject, so at this point you would not qualify to be a math teacher. However, math and science teachers are in high demand.

There are other on-line schools besides Phoenix. Nova Southeastern and Walden are two, though I’m not sure if they offer a Masters in math. Both have websites where you can check their offerings.

If you want to be a coach, perhaps you can get a second bachelors in education with a physical education focus. That would put you in good stead for a coaching position. Again, it will take some homework on your part to find a school with that program. Or a second bachelors in education with a focus on math would be an alternative. Masters degrees aren’t as varied as the Bachelors programs as they have very specific foci. I know several teachers with multiple Bachelors degrees, so it isn’t as odd as it sounds.

Do you think you will settle down and teach in Oklahoma? If so, check out the Oklahoma Department of Education on line for their requirements.

Good Luck! Hope the next four years goes quickly and safely for you!
