I need help!?

Well it’s currently 4:46 AM here in Texas, and here I sit, at the computer typing this – not exactly sure what to say or even why I felt so compelled to say anything at all. My name is LaKendra and I am 17, I’ll be a senior in just a few days, and I’m having trouble facing that reality. I started typing this in order to tell you about my life, but I’m not even sure where to start. For all my life it has been just me and my mom really, against the rest of our family and the rest of the world it seems. She is an amazing mom, doing everything to the best of her ability. When I was little, however, she was anorexic, and when I was 12, after many years of struggling, she was given two months to live. That entire year I did not have any friends, I was too busy going straight home from school trying to make my mother live. I remember sitting there, watching her try so hard to take her medicine and to eat, and how it would make her so sick, she would cry while lifting a fork or spoon to her mouth. Inevitably this took a toll on my 12 year-old self, and I have been forever changed because of it. I truly feel that I have grown old before my time, and at 17 I have the world on my shoulders. My mom is married now, as of September 2006, but things are still very hard on us – not long back, my step dad had to sell his cell phone so that we would have money for groceries. But despite these conditions, I have goals for myself. I want to go to college next fall, I want to make something of myself. I want to major in Social Work and minor in Child Psychology. The only thing is, we really cant afford it. I work now but with day-to-day needs, that money does not get to be saved. I dream of helping people but I cannot accomplish that dream without help of my own. I want to do something with my life, and I am not afraid to ask for help. Please.

You should begin with talking with your guidance counselor in school. You want to be sure you are taking courses that help open the door to college. Also your counselor will be a great resources as to who to talk with about scholarships and grants.

The second person I would talk to is an admission officer at your local community college (or state college) and have them help you in learning about options for funding college.

You should also plan on going to any college fares that happen at your H.S. or in your community.

I want to commend you on being such a positive person and for taking care of your mom. You should not give up on the idea of college. Like some of the other people stated, there are ways of paying for college. Definitely start looking for scholarships & ask your school counselor for help. I know that there are huge books you can find at the library or book store that will tell you all kinds of scholarships available. you can also search online.

when january 1, 2008 rolls around, make sure you fill out the FAFSA. ask your mom to do your taxes as soon as she can because she will need the info from your taxes to fill out the FAFSA. government money that you may qualify for could be loans and grants. loans you have to payback, grants you do not.

there’s also an option of private loans from the bank.

there’s always a way to fund your education, so give it a shot and don’t give up! you sound like a fighter and a really strong person! keep up the great work and good luck with everything!!!!! =)

College, I agree can be an expensive process, however, there are many ways to make it affordable.

I am not sure if you are a Junior or Senior in high school, it really does not matter, you need to start looking for scholarships now. The best place to go is your high shcool counselor and talk to them about where you can get those opportunities (go to them first because they get a lot of opportunities). Yes many of them will require you to write an essay, suck it up, and do it, I did, and it helped a lot (I applied to about 30 scholarships, of which i recieved 6).

Now if your family is not financially set, you need to fill out FAFSA, which is a federal aid form. They help A LOT!!!! You want to do this areound february march your senior yr. Not only that, depending on where you apply to school, they have scholarship programs as well and you should apply to those as well.

Another option would be to do Community college for a yr to get your basics out of the way, it is a lot cheaper, and then transfer to another school. Just make sure your grades are good if you plan on transferring. Texas has a lot of great schools and many of them, so you have a lot of options.

Good Luck!
