I agree with the previous answers on being proactive and letting your professor know way in advance. Next semester, ask your instructor to sit down with you for a short meeting right at the beginning of the semester and explain that you are working and there may be some days that conflict and you will have to miss, but you are willing to work with the professor to succeed in the class – that way when the days come up, you know the professor knows your situation and you don’t have to stress.

For this semester, the only advice I would add is to be very flexible and make it clear to the professor that you are willing to make up the days missed. If there is a paper due on the day you will be missing, turn the paper in early, possibly the day before (this will show the professor your initiative.) If there is a test or quiz that day, arrange a time to make it up. Offer to meet with the professor outside of class – at a time you can fit into your schedule – to discuss the lecture or make up an assignment. Professors value attendance because they don’t want you missing the material, if you make arrangements to cover the material you missed, then they will be more willing to work with you.

Good luck!

Be honest with your professor BEFORE those days come. If you professor says my rules stand then theres not much you can do on that front. Go talk to your boss then again BEFORE those days come and see if you can do anything on that front. Like the first poster said its college, you are an adult now and sometimes priorities get into a mix up. You may need to decide whats more important right now, if you can get a job somewhere else, or if you can some how drop this class for now, and take it later.

I’ve found the key is just to be honest before the situation comes up. Usually, if you talk to your work and professor before the event comes up, they may be more likely to work with you rather than waiting until the week of.

if it were my class and i said you cant miss more than 2 days of class and you did, I would fail you. its not high school anymore your a grown adult. i would tell you if you cant go to class because of other responsibilies then take the class later when you know you can make it.
