I need advice on my major in college?

I’m currently a sophomore at a university studying Graphic Design. However, I’m not very happy or excited about it. I only chose graphic design because I thought I was pretty good at drawing/painting and I love computers and playing around in photoshop. Plus there was absolutely nothing else I was interested in.

I was unhappy my freshman year with all of my pre-art classes but I thought it would get better this year because I would actually be into the graphics. Although I like learning the different computer programs, I’m finding that my artistic and creative talents aren’t quite up to par. It’s hard to explain but I just don’t enjoy having to be creative and think of new ideas.

So what else could I do? I’m no good with math or science. I could never be a teacher or a doctor/nurse. I’ve considered accounting. Although it does involve a little math, it’s not that much. I don’t know. I know I need to decide for myself but any advice would be appreciated.

Don’t feel bad – this is a common experience for college students. It’s good that you can be honest about your skills and interests.

Colleges have career counseling departments. They can offer you standardized tests to see where your interests lie; they can also help you think of alternatives that interest you. (If for some reason your college doesn’t have one, you may be able to use similar services at another local college. You can also look for career counseling services offered independently in a nearby city.)

Ask if there are employees or alumni who use Photoshop and similar programs at work. Find out what job titles these people have, and how much creative input is required. Some people may be executing the ideas of a lead designer, for example.

You might want to take some time off from school and work for a while.

The book “What Color is Your Parachute?” has great questions that help you figure out what you’re interested in and what skills you like to use.
