I’m thinking about Law School but my GPA is just 3.25…?
I just graduated from California State University, Northridge with a BA in Psychology. My GPA used to be terrible (under 3.00) but I worked my butt off and managed to raise it up. My GPA in Psychology is 3.89.
I was wondering how good are my chances of getting into an ABA approved law school. Of course, I need to do well on the LSAT. Also, would they recognize my improvement in GPA over the last two years (in my major and upper division courses)?

If you’re teetering on the edge of admission/not being accepted, many schools will look favorably on an upward trend in grades. But here’s your main priority: take a class and do well on the LSAT. Many schools, especially in the top tier (top 100 law schools) work off of a formula. In that formula, the school combines both the LSAT score and GPA into one number and uses that to weed out candidates. So if you have a high LSAT but a low GPA, they’ll cancel each other out. Some law schools weight LSAT more than GPA in that formula, and some vice versa, so you’ll have an advantage of researching which schools are like that by reputation. If you’re close then your essay, upward trend in grades, letters of rec, etc. could push you over the edge so make sure your application is completely flawless.

You can search the website by the school of your choice and if gives you people’s GPAs and LSAT scores, and tells you if it was enough to get them accepted, waitlisted, or denied. This will help you compare.

You probably won’t get into a “prestige” law school, but who the hell cares. If you open your horizons in terms of geography, the results might surprise you. Consider schools in other areas of the country, especially the Midwest. Colleges in the Midwest, outside of the prestige big names like Northwestern, Notre Dame or Michigan struggle to maintain a diverse student body. Admissions criteria and selection take into consideration geographic diversity. Instead of the Top 25 law schools, or even 25-50, look at 50 through 75. (ex: U. of Missouri, U of Nebraska, St. Louis U) You’ll probably do okay if you pull down a respectable LSAT score.
