Stranded

I’m a student in medical school, but I’m starting to realize medicine is not for me. What should I do?

I have a bachelor of science in Biology as my degree.

Stick it out and finish the MD. You’ve already displaced one eager person who could have taken your slot. That space can never be recovered, so don’t waste it.

You don’t have to work as an MD after you graduate – and you certainly don’t have to do a residency. There are case of people following their MD with Clown School. Others go to Law School.

I have known many students in your situation. I feel for you.

You didn’t say how far along you were in your education. If you’re first year, I’d advise you to discuss this with your parents and bail out into another area of interest.

If you’re beyond the first year, I’d suggest that you consider remaining until you complete med school. You don’t have to do a residency, but you’ll at least have earned an MD. You can then pursue any other career you’d like, such as health care administration (big bucks there).

If you decide to bail, you might want to look into your local government for a job. There are many agencies that require a BS in a life science for employment.

What is it about medicine that isn’t right for you? That will help you figure out what you can do next. I’d have you stay in med school for a little while longer, until you figure out your next moves. And you do have options:

– Someone mentioned pharmaceutical sales. Without question, you are qualified for this, if it interests you. They seek out people with some med school. Medical device sales would also be a good fit.

– Lab work. You could get an entry-level job in a lab, even at your current university, or for a private employer.

– You could switch majors, and enter a medicine (or science) related PhD program at your school (or another), if research interests you, and medicine interests you, but it’s the doctoring part that isn’t for you.

– You could stay in the MD program, and actually do an MD/PhD and end up in research.

– If you had a couple years full time work prior to entering med school, you could switch to an MBA program. When you graduate, you could work in marketing for a medical device or pharma company, or even for consumer products.

– You could do a dual degree. You could get your MD/MBA and work in hospital admin or government, your MD/JD and work in goverment or for a law firm, or, as I’d already mentioned, your MD/PhD. I’ll link to one school’s example of such a medical scholar’s program. They give some ideas for what sorts of jobs such people can get.

Follow your heart. My cousin became a doctor because that’s what his parent’s wanted and he’s miserable.

You could do a lot with a biology degree. Become a teacher, a researcher, get a little more education and go into a specialized field of biology.

But please, don’t become a doctor if your heart’s not in it.

I suggest Pharmaceutical Sales. You already have the courses most desired by employers.
