I’m a Junior in high school. I want to be a writer. What college should I go to?

I’m a junior in high school this year and I need to seriously think about college. I want to be a writer (my dream is to be on the best seller list) and my main thing I write about is horror or romance mysteries. I live in New Jersey and I don’t want to live out of state since it’ll be the first time on my own. And I wanna be close enough that I can come and visit my family but far enough away where I can have my own independance and not depend on my mom for everything…The collges I wanted to go to were Camden County, Gloucester County, and Rutgers (all in NJ) but now I’m thinking about going somewhere else, maybe in another state, to show my mom I can handle being on my own. But I want it to be a good school with a good literature/english department. What are some colleges that are good for me?

Most selective liberal arts colleges and non-technical universities have good English departments. (A lot of the technical universities have good ones, too; the subject’s just not their main focus.) Finding a place that’ll support the kind of writing you’re interested in may be trickier. A lot of creative writing departments have a bias against “genre” fiction like romance, mystery, and horror: they don’t think it has enough literary merit. Investigate the faculty of any program you’re interested in to find out what they’ve written and whether they’re a good match with your style.

One place that does offer a concentration in popular fiction, at least at the graduate level, is Seton Hill University in Pennsylvania. You might want to give it a look.

I heard Sarah Lawerence was good. I think any good to great college with a BA in English would help a lot. And especially a concentration or minor in Literature and/or Creative Writing.
