DO NOT GO TO WORK FIRST!
I know a lot of people will tell you to work for a while and save money and then go, but this can really kill your plans for college. Knock it out fast. Trust me, I took time off and it was nearly 10 years after high school when I went back and did it, and it was only because of EXTREME LUCK that my life allowed me to do that.
Try to leave your dog at either of your parents’ homes for one year, so you can live in a dorm get used to college and the huge changes that comes with it, see your dog on weekends or holidays, and then take it with you your second year.
You say you have a dog now, so it lives with at least one of your parents now. Please consider living without it for one year. A university year really isn’t that long anyway; it’s four months of school, 2 months off, four months on 2 months off. You can be with it during the breaks.
Good luck in your decision.
