I have a BA Arts and Sciences but now want to change careers. Do I have to get another BA in another field?

I have a BA in Graphic Art but now want to go back for my Masters in a totally different field. Can I do that? Or do I have to get a BA in a related field first, then go for my masters?

Thanks

You shouldn’t have to get another BA, however, you will probably need to take prerequisites. A lot depends on what field you want to go into. You should contact the grad program and discuss it with someone there. Take your transcripts with you so they can tell you what classes you need. Most programs will offer conditional admissions meaning that you can take courses in the program while finishing your prereqs.

It depends on what you want to get the MS degree in. If you can make a connection to your existing BS, they may let you in based on some of the common classes you took for this degree.

If it is a brand new subject, you may have to take preparation courses – because you’ll be competing with other grad students who do have this background. You don’t want to fail in grad school.

Be happy if they don’t require a complete undergrad major before grad school. They want to to succeed and you want to succeed – so they will probably steer you right. IF they say you need to take courses you feel you already know, ask if you can take a challenge test.

the worst thing is to NOT do it because they want you to take the extra courses. Don’t work in a career you are not that interested in just because of a couple of courses. You can probably take them on line, anyway.

good luck
