I graduated college with a Communications degree, but I don’t know what I can use that in. I need direction.

I thought I wanted to get into broadcasting, but after doing promotional work for a major radio station for 3 years, I’ve discovered that that’s not for me. I am now feeling lost, without a direction to go to.

I’m now working at a customer service center for a car insurance company, but I’m better then that. I’m better then being part of a Street Team. But I don’t know where to go, what to do. I thought about Public Relations, but I don’t think I can base a career on one class.

I realize that it’s difficult asking a total stranger(s) something like this, but I have no idea where to even start. Just a little direction is all I need.

Don’t feel bad about yourself. I’ve been where you’re at (feeling lost) and it sucks. But if you stay focused on figuring it out, being patient and making some necessary sacrifices, you’ll find your way out of it eventually. Here are some resoures that might help:

If you’re still interested in communications, these links here can help you start your search:

http://www.google.com/search?num=20&hl=en&safe=off&q=what+can+I+do+with+a+communications+degree&btnG=Search

http://www.google.com/search?num=20&hl=en&safe=off&q=what+can+I+do+with+a+communications+major

Go through the links above and write down any careers that sound interesting to you. Then go to this site:

http://www.bls.gov/oco/

It’s the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook. Type in the career in the search box in the top right-hand corner. You’ll get all kinds of info on it, including training, future job outlook and salary. Then google the career to find more information. Do the same for other fields outside of communications that you might be interested in as well.

If you’re not sure if you want to stay in communications or not, or what to do, these might help:

Google search for how to find your calling and purpose:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=how+to+find+your+purpose

An article:

“Career Chemistry: The Best Jobs for Six Personality Types”

A helpful book:

“I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was: How to Discover What You Really Want and How to Get It” by Barbara Sher

The above author’s website. You might find it helpful:

Other books:

“Do What You Are: Discover the Perfect Career for You Through the Secrets of Personality Type” by Paul D. Tieger

“What Color Is Your Parachute 2003: A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters and Career (What Color Is Your Parachute)” by Richard Nelson Bolles

I hope this helps. Good luck.

What about working in advertising? A Communications degree should get you an entry-level position at a firm and then you can work your way up. It involves team-work to come up with advertising campaigns, but it would be your individual ideas and creativity that determine how you do in the field.

You could also work in publications. If you live in a big city, you could work on the staff of a magazine that specializes in something you’re interested in, and there’s always newspaper work as well. You could also do freelance work so you’re not limited to a single publication.

Best of luck!

Why would anyone major in something without knowing how they could use that degree?! Duh…Maybe you need to go back to school, like grade school.
