I am planning on majoring in criminal justice and minor in sociology?

my goal is to work with abused children/teenagers. I wanted to major in social work, but no schools around me offer that program. Someone told me if I major in criminal justice and minor in sociology i could get a job helping abused individuals. What kind of jobs could i get with such degrees? 25yr/ veteran

I concur with the last poster, this will not get you a job easily in human services, it will get you a job in law enforcement or probation. You would probably be better off with a degree in Sociology and a minor in psych (or visa versa). You might also consider child development (if that option exists in your area).

Criminal justice+sociology is a track that people who want to go into law enforcement or go on to law school usually follow. For social work, why not psychology and sociology?

Ask your local social services office what kind of degree they require from their counselors. This is really the only way to tell if that degree is going to achieve what you want it to.

There are certainly other things you could do with that degree even if you didn’t work at a social services office. Police counselors, for example. Or its a great degree to pursue for a pre-law degree in Family Law.
