i am applying to msu and they ask for a short, up-to-400-words essay..?

if i only get 400 words, must i use standard essay form (like an introduction paragraph, body paragraphs, conclusion) or does it not matter?

Using a standard five-paragraph essay form is seen as too formulaic when writing a personal statement. You should have a clear introduction and conclusion, but don’t worry about having it in separate paragraphs. The five-paragraph block essay is actually one of the first things that upper-level English teachers are trying to eliminate – simply because it constrains creativity and makes students feel like they have to box in their thoughts. Make sure that you have structure – but make it original and unique by not worrying too much about your “formal style”.

While it is likely that a college will still accept the essay for purposes of admission they will also use it as a basis for other determinations.

The university uses entrances essays, not to “get to know candidates”, but to determine their ability with grammer, usage and structure. These are used to determine honor programs, academic scholorships and the like.

I would suggest using proper writing technique on entrance essays. Also, since your entering your adulthood, keep in mind that being overly formal doesn’t hurt, but being informal certainly does.

it doesn’t matter. you don’t have to. and often that format is too formal. they just want to get to know you better from your essay. you can go a little longer than what they ask for too(as long as its not like twice as long). one of the colleges i applied to wanted 500 word essays and one of my was 590. i was still accepted.
