The sky is the limit for Home Science graduates. They can choose careers in Foods & Nutrition, Human Development & Family studies, Resource Management & Consumer Sciences and Apparel & Textiles. Graduates can take up jobs as dieticians in hospitals, diet consultants / counsellors in lifestyle clinics, freelance dieticians food demonstrators, scientists in research institutions, teaching faculty in universities, project leaders in developmental projects, nutrition experts in international organisations, consultants for child development programmes, programme officers for child welfare schemes, production managers in apparel industries, quality control inspectors, CAD professionals, interior designers and colour consultants.

A degree in Home Science also opens up vistas for self-employment.

One could start their on school, crèche, interior design and fashion boutiques or even set up an event management firm. For further studies, the doors are open till Ph.D, apart from attempting al competitive examinations like CAT, GMAT, IAS or NIFT.

Clinical dieticians: Provide nutritional services for patients in hospitals and nursing care facilities. They assess patients’ nutritional needs, develop and implement nutrition programmes and evaluate and report the results. They also consult doctors and other professionals to coordinate medical and nutritional needs of the patient.

Community dieticians: They counsel individuals and groups in the community on nutritional and healthy practices designed to prevent disease and promote health. Working in public health clinics, community development blocks, midday meal programmes and health maintenance organisations, community dieticians evaluate individual needs, develop nutritional care plans and instruct individuals and their families.

Management dieticians: They oversee largescale meal planning and preparation in health care facilities, company cafeterias, prisons and schools and colleges.

They hire, train and direct other dieticians and food service workers, budget for and purchase food, equipment and supplies, enforce strict sanitary and safety regulations and prepare records and reports.

Consultant dieticians: They work on a contract basis with health care facilities or opt for private practice. They also work on research material and publications. Other career options include counselling and guidance, which could be taken up by students who specialise in the field of correctional disorders.

Teaching, and working as lab technicians are other possibilities. Entrepreneurs may consider opening food joints focussing on health food. Working as researchers or analysts as food adulteration detection centres is yet another option.
