The main thing is to stay alert without becoming paranoid. Be aware of any local activitIies that could create problems for the community (IE: the anniversary of 09/11). Any suspicious thefts either in the hotel or in the community. Also watch for people who are taking inappropriate photographs or videos (ie: of surveillance cameras around the hotel); have an unusual interest in the hotel; note taking; drawing diagrams; using binoculars or night vision goggles. Also look for people who avoid eye contact, people who are in places where they don’t belong, people leaving quickly when being approached and overdressed for the type of weather.

Other activities that apply to hotels include refusing maid service, only accept room service outside of the door, only accept deliveries at the hotel’s front desk. There are other signs to watch out for that are listed in the source below. Good luck on your assignment.

Body language is probably the biggest tip off. As some one else mentioned, nervousness may be an indication. However, a person who is too calm may also seem suspicious. For example, if a person makes eye contact with you and does not look away or attempt to talk to you in a public place. They may show pleasure at your discomfort due to them staring at you. A person wearing sunglasses or a hat inside can be suspicious because they are hiding their features. A suspicious person may behave in a way that doesn’t make sense. For example, they may have a laptop in a hotel lobby but not type on it.

Here are 2 good examples:

Body language….if they shouldn’t be in the hotel then their body language will show it. They will be nervous and it should show.

Clothing…..if they are in the Ritz Carlton and wearing jeans with holes in them I would be a bit suspicious, considering the Ritz Carlton is for the rich/upper class.
