How to go from a BA in Business to an MS in Geololgy for career?

I graduated with a Bachelor’s in Business but my real interest is in Geology. I realize most real work is done at the Master’s level, and so I would like to go back and take levelling courses to apply for a master’s program in geology. I am particularly interested in oceanography. How feasible is this? I’d be curious to hear from current geologists. Also, how do you geologists like your careers? Thanks!

I’m not a geologist, but I did study it some. I would have loved pursuing that as a career, but I’m just not physically up to the kind of fieldwork I’d want to do. C’est la vie.

I’d recommend an intro geology course with a lab component. Probably need a paleontology class as well and definitely mineralogy. Hydrology too… Really try to get your hands dirty and get out into the field. Offer to help your professors in their own field research. While gophering, you’d pick up a lot of information.

I’d look around for good programs and get in touch with them. Find out from them what courses you need to take to be ready for a masters. Geologists are fairly easy going and nerdy (to varying degrees).

Good luck!!!!

you aren’t really going to get anyone interested in admitting your to a geology program until you show some mastery of the subject. if you’ve not already taken a few courses – as well as some physical science, you probably won’t get the time of day;

most geologists are not oceanographers. but studying the rocks under the ocean is a pretty hot topic these days. check out Scripps, Princeton, and the other places that offer both programs (oceanography & geology).

otherwise, think of how a business that employs geologists might be lucky to land you to help run their administrative side. business degrees are usually best applied in areas where the person has other interests. why not consider that?

good luck
