How to get into University of Pennsylvania?

I’m thinking about applying early decision in the fall. What do they look for? I have a 4.1 GPA and really good extracurricular activities, but my SAT score is not up to notch (mid 1300s out of 1600), and I’m retaking it in October. the critical reading section is basically my weakness. I have taken more than 2 SAT IIs…does UPenn just look at the top 2? Will they even consider the other lower scores?

Also, I want to go to business school, and Wharton is obviously very, very competitive. Do students often feel extremely overwhelmed and stressed?

Also, what is it like at Penn? How are the students, the extracurriculars? Are people generally happy there? If you’ve gone there, is there anything you wish you’d known before you went??

Thanks!!

Hi there, I’m a Wharton grad, top of my class with a 4.0 GPA. All of the top colleges are now looking for a diverse group of students. If it’s the school of your choice, then apply after retaking your SATs. Yes, Wharton is more difficult to get into than College of General Studies at Penn. If you don’t get into Wharton, you could go to Penn (CGS) for a year (as most of the classes you take your Freshman year at either program are the same anyway…then apply for Wharton again. Just a thought… YES…ALL students at Penn and Wharton feel overwhelmed by stress to a high degree. Some of us actually left final exams feeling sick to our stomachs. There’s A LOT of studying for their gruesome exams. No such thing as any easy midterm or final. It’s a very tough school and I’ve studied at many including over seas. I thought it was tough, and I still had a 4.0 GPA at Wharton. I had no time for much of a social life. Now and then I went out. I belonged to a sorrity and I was class president. However, it burnt me out at the end. 🙂 If you can get in, GO! You’ll meet many interesting, life-long friendships with people from more cultures than any other college I’ve attended. The admin. was great, and the students are very competitive. When you leave there, you will come out with the confidence to enter the workforce and a solid education! It was worth it. I hope you get accepted. I had an exceptional experience and have many close friends from Wharton and Penn. Oh–choose easy classes your first semester, so you can see what it’s all about (study time involved, etc.). I would not take CALC or STATS 1st semester at Wharton, or you may get discouraged. You may see students talking to themselves as they walk through Huntsman Hall, b/c they are under so much stress. My suggestion, take a walk down Locust Walk (right through center of campus), and feel the environment and students–that may help. If you feel that you should be there, than go for it! If you don’t get accepted. See if the College of General Studies will accept you in their part-time program and then go full time later. Hope that helps!! Good Luck! Mommy E
