How to become a Veterinarian?

Hi I am 20 years old, and am in an online program to earn my BA is psychology, but like most people my age, I’m not sure exactly what I want to do. I have wanted to be a Vet for a long time, but when I started school I didn’t think I would have the motivation to go for so long. Well i am now ready for such a task and was wondering what my first steps would be in becoming a vet. I know I need a BA degree, but in what? I also know after the BA degree I need to go to a vet med school. The school I go to doesn’t have a vet program but they do have a bachelors of arts in psychology. Would this type of degree work, or does it have to be one directed towards animals. I am just lost at what to do. Its only my first year of college, so if I am forced to attend a different school, do you think the credits I earned thus far could be transfered. I just need to know what are the beginning steps to take. A lot of places offer an associates degree around here, but I know a BA is required

In order to qualify for admission to a veterinary school, you will need a BS in Biology, Chemistry, or both. Actually, it doesn’t matter what your official major is, but you will need to have completed all of the required biology and chemistry classes with a very high GPA. When friends of mine were applying to vet med schools years ago, they interviewed the top 7 percent of their applicants and admitted the top 3 percent. A friend of mine who completed her BS with a 3.8 was admitted. My understanding is that veterinary schools are more likely to admit in-state students or at least students who graduated from undergraduate progams in their state. They admit more students from some some undergraduate programs than others, so I would pick a couple of vet schools that you are most interested in and find out where their recently admitted students graduated from. They do release this information, so if you can’t find it on their website, ask the admissions office. You are not going to be able to study chemistry and biology via an online program, at least not with enough credibility for admission to a vet school, so you will have to attend a brick and mortar school. You’d do best to attend a school that vet schools are admitting their students from. Good luck!

You didn’t mention your state, so here’s a list of vet schools with links to each school: http://www.aavmc.org/students_admissions/vet_schools.htm

Vet schools are more competitive than med schools and the entrance requirments are almost identical.
