I got offered full tuition waiver and a teaching assistant stipend for my MA (also majoring in Geography, but minored in Geology)…and finished in a year and a half.

In both the undergrad and grad geography majors….I had a firm foundation in cartography and air photo interp/remote sensing. I did my BA/MA with different minors in order to round out my Geography education. Be aware that Geography is often subdivided into Physical (mostly physical/life sciences), Cultural (mostly social science), and Techniques (methodologies for applying technology).

I couldn’t really decide how to specialize…so kept myself “neutral” by being able well rounded in my education so I could have more flexibility to decide later…in other words, I was suited to go on for further specialization in all 3 areas.

Classmates of mine who chose early and later found out they wanted to change had to do additional course work or start with more “make up” courses…a costly process. Worst yet was to graduate and THEN find out they didn’t really like the specialization they picked….an even more costly process financially….or emotionally to be stuck doing that only because they couldn’t financially afford to change.
