I didn’t have a car my freshman year and lived on campus with a meal plan. My parents gave me $100 a month for spending money. That was completely adequate for me at the time. I ate most meals in the cafeteria and would go to inexpensive college-type places with friends on weekends. If I had any money left over, I would buy clothes, etc. Most college kids don’t get new clothes as often as they did in high school. You’ll mostly wear t-shirts, jeans, fleeces, and flip flops anyway.
With a car, I would budget for about two tanks of gas a month in addition.
I would also ask for more if you’re living in an apartment off campus instead of a dorm because you are more likely to run into additional expenses like groceries, cleaning supplies, etc.
If you want some extra spending money without getting a real job try baby-sitting or tutoring.
