how many years do you have to go to college?

After the bachelor’s degree, you can usually start the doctoral degree (if accepted into a program, of course) although a few programs require a master’s degree first. How long the doctoral program takes depends on time limits placed by the college and department and, on a practical level, how long the college is willing to provide financial support for your studies. This varies between colleges and universities.
I’ve known some people who had a family and had only phone contact with them for 2 years and earned their doctorate. Others have taken 4 or 5.
On average, you should plan on about 7 years to earn your doctorate. If you are doing a bachelors degree, find out if there are programs in your field where you can enter a doctorate right away (you will earn your masters along the way, sort of like an associates degree is earned during yoru bachelors).
If you go straight through for a doctorate, you can defer your loans without penalty. I did not go on for a doctorate, and now I am regretting it because it’s hard to go back. But yet, it isn’t impossible for me to go back for it if I really wanted to.
Good luck to you!
