How many units of one class can I take and still transfer?

explaination : so I’m going to a community college and plan to do the two-year transfer thing. I’ve got all my classes figured out and such but I need around 20 more units to get the 60 total units needed for transfer. (I’m following the IGETC )

Now I eventually plan to major in Japanese and I’m planning to take a Japanese course. The thing is, I was wondering how many semesters I can take of Japanese to fill that 20 extra units I need. I’ll be starting at Japanese 402 and theres only 411 & 412 after that but I was wondering if they don’t like when students do that , etc.

(I’ve studied Japanese before so this wont be my first time, just continuing :] )

Thanks for any help, I really need it =]

This is rather difficult to answer. You will need to consult colleges to which you intend to apply later on to find out whether you can get transfer credit for each of the Japanese classes from your community college. You will also want to find out whether the courses will count as electives in your major, actual courses in your major, or general elective credit, if the classes do transfer. You should be careful with regard to major elective credit–some schools will say you cannot count more than 55-60 hours in one department (in your case, Japanese), toward your Bachelor’s degree. If you just ended up getting a bunch of Japanese electives transferred, then you will still need to take all of the upper-level courses you need for your major when you get there, and having to do that could easily make you surpass the 55-60 credit limit if you have transferred in Japanese electives.

If you are already advanced enough to skip the introductory and intermediate levels (which I assume you are), you might want to transfer to a 4-year school after one year if you want to avoid transfer credit problems with these advanced classes.
