How many schools should I apply to?

I’m currently a Junior and have already started preparing to apply for graduate school next year, well I’m gathering money for it. I’m a psychology major and want to apply to PsyD programs. However, I heard that I have to apply to at least 10 schools, just in case I won’t get accepted.

I have a 3.34 Accumulative GPA and a 3.10 Psychology GPA. I volunteered 100+ hours at an institute for abused children, got certified by CPS and I’m working toward a certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis.

So, my question is. How many programs should I apply to?

I don’t know who told you that “10 schools” thing but I’m not impressed. If a student came to me asking for a letter of recommendation (and good letters from your professors make or break an application so this is important) and said they wanted it sent to 10 schools they’d get the fish-eye from me. Not because it takes much more work but because it says this student has not done the homework to decide where s/he wants to go. You get an idea of maybe 3 schools, talk with your professors now about this, and get in 3 really good applications.

Impressive! 100+ hours of community service ๐Ÿ™‚

Yeah, I would say shortlist top ten choices, and see if you can dump a couple which you aren’t really interested/confident in.

3 Top Schools (Lower chance, but a chance nonetheless)

4 Well regarded schools (You will be expecting to accept offers from these)

1 or 2 more Safety net schools (If all goes wrong, and you still want to go postgrad, here are the ones you might probably look at)

Hope this helps ๐Ÿ™‚

You have unique qualifications. (Until I read your question, I did not consider that I have 260+ hours of volunteer community service for children.) I think you should knock on more than just a few doors, knowing that college acceptances are often picky, inconsistent and fickle.
