If you want to be a school guidance counselor you will first need to hold a teaching position, but if you want to be a school social worker (counsels kids, fairly similar) then its four years for a bachelor and 1-2 years for a masters depending on whether or not you are accepted advanced standing. This is if you major in Social work. You can also major in psychology, but that tends to take longer than the social work program. Either way you go you will need to pass a test to obtain a counselor’s license. These tests are state specific, therefor passing it in one state does not necessarily mean you will be able to practice with it in another. Obviously you would not be limited to only working in schools there are many other areas where you can work with teens in this field of work.
