How does an 18 year old highschool graduate find a good paying job?

I’m currently attending college and I dont have any “professional” work experience. I’ve only worked at places like Sonic and grocery stores.. I want to be like, a receptionist or an assistant and get paid around 9-11 bucks an hour? How can I find a job like this?

It is possible to get work as a receptionist/assistant during uni and without experience but it takes perserverance and luck! Most employers aren’t willing to take on students in a position like this due to the hours that students have to attend uni (generally during business hours which are hours that receptionists etc work). Not to mention they may not be willing to train due to the fact that you are older (not a junior who they can get away with paying lower wages to) and you’ve never had any experience in the industry.

My advice would be look for positions like at hotels where receptionists are required for evening shifts – they expect the standard of applications to be lower as these are the positions students apply for. You can get some experience and then move on. There are also courses that can give you the skills required for such a position – this may make up for your lack of experience.

It may also be worthwhile contacting some temp agencies – they often offer free training and have flexible hours.

Basically if you want a job in this area you need to have good customer service skills, be highly presentable, as well as a good computer knowledge and typing ability. Good oral and written communication skills are also important.

I was in the same position as you a year ago – 2nd year of uni and I had only ever worked in retail, hospitality, promotions and childcare. Anyway I applied for a job as PA to a CEO of a marketing company thinking I’d never get it and sure enough I did! After getting the experience there I now do temp work which fits in around my uni and pays much better.

Good luck!

I would try craigslist.org. It’s a community based website and there are some employers posting job ads. However, some places do require experience to be paid $9-11 as a receptionist or an assistant, but since you have customer service experience it should help you out. Hope that helps!

It takes people skills, if you want a job hop in your car and drive around, if a place looks cool or somewhere you might consider working, go in and ask to talk to a supervisor or human relations. Tell them you are interested in working there and why you feel you are right for the job. Just because you don’t have experience in that particular area doesn’t mean you don’t have other experiences that will help you succeed and be able to handle that job. Who cares if a place says they aren’t looking for anyone, just go from place to place until you find something.

If you are still living in their home then yes they can still ground you. If your so worried about it get a job like most all regular 18 year olds and move out on your own.
