Should I start with an Associate’s Degree or just jump right into a Bachelor’s Degree?

I am a 30 year old single parent that is going back to school. I am having a difficult time deciding whether to get an Associate’s Degree is Business Admin or jump right into a Bachelor’s in Computer Science (Managment Information Systems). I know in the long run a 4 year degree would be worth more, but Im afraid I will get half way into it and it will be too difficult or I will get burnt out. I would like to enroll in classes for November so I need some advice quick!!!! Please help

I am ony 21 and I had this same problem entering college. I think it is best to get your Associates in both. When your finsh one, you can enter the other. Besides, when you finish your Associate’s in any of the subject, you can have a break to decide if you would like to go further or trying another subject. Wish you the best of luck, hope this helps.

You can go straight for the Bachelors. Generally the Associates is what a lot of people get who only go as far as junior college (2 years). It basically consists of the core freshman and sophomore courses that you have to take just about anywhere, along with a few extra courses in AA (arts), AS(science), or AAS(applied science) tracts. It’s like an optional 1st post-high school degree. I suspect that most students go straight to a 4 year college or university go straight for the Bachelors.

I’m 30 also and went back to school when I was 28. I have three kids and a working husband. I decided to go back to school because I wanted the feeling of accomplishment and a little independence to boot. I wasn’t even going for a degree when I started. I was just going for a certificate. Just before I finished that program I decided I wanted the Associate’s Degree in Business Administration also. So, I’m now one semester away from my degree.

I would suggest you go with what you feel you can handle at the moment. If you feel it will be too tough try for the Associates first and if you later feel you can handle more then hey, go for it. It’s never too late to go back for your Bachelor’s if that’s what you decide.

Test the waters with the Associates and see how you feel before writing off the Bachelor’s. You just might be able to handle more than you think.

Good luck and congrats on your decision to go back to school.

Usually I would advise that you go straight to the Bachelor’s Degree, however, since you think that there is a chance you may not finish the 4 year degree, I think the AA is a good option. If you get an AA, you can still transfer to a 4 year school. What kind of jobs are you looking for? Check the job market and what the requirements are, this might help you decide what kind of degree to pursue (and might keep you motivated to get your BA/BS).

Hi. The only thing with a Bachelors that you don’t get a degree until 4 years later. I recommend getting your AA first and then continue with your Bachelors. I am a mom also, and trust me, I know how hard it is to juggle school and kids. I myself went back to school and got my AA first (well I get it at the end of this semester). I am glad i did it this way, because I don’t really know if I am going to continue…but at least I will have my AA. But ultimately it depends on what you know you can do. If you have your heart set on it, go for your Bachelors. Hope this helps and good luck 🙂

I think your children will be your biggest motivation. My mom was pregnant with me and had three other children to raise by herself but she still stuck with it and graduated with her bachelors degree. After that, she supported us just fine and I was able to go to college without such hardship.

Go for the bachelors…it will get you farther in any career much faster. I just graduated from college with my bachelors and it put me way ahead of the game. Good luck and God Bless:)

Going for an A.A. or an A.S. would be a good start. It is less expensive and the education is just as good as at the university. Make sure you choose a community college that can full transfer it’s credits to a close by university.

usually you can get the two year degree WHILE you are working on the 4 year one

its good to have at least some kinda degree, in case you flunk out or change your mind, or run off with a derelict or a rock star
