How do you become a specialized nurse? Surgical, psychiatric, neonatal?

Is it just on the job training or do you need further certifications after your RN?

It’s a combination of both. You will have to have on the job experience after you get your RN before you would be able to apply for any certifications.

Even though certifications are not required to work in a certain setting, say psych wards, it greatly increases your marketability when you are looking for a job.

A neonatal nurse makes two times as much as a surgical tech, yet a Surgical tech in basic terms desires an associate degree that takes 2 years. A neonatal nurse desires a Masters degree that takes 6 years.
