How do I choose what degree to shoot for?

I am a jack of all trades and master of none, and I love some portion of everything, but don’t love everything about anything. For example I love the idea of going into mechanical engineering, but I can’t stand the idea of trying to use calculus 3. Any good advice on how to choose a major with this in mind would be very helpful.

Take a few different classes and see what you enjoy the most. There is no rush to decide what major you want to follow right when you get out of high school. If you like Mechanical Engineering then take a few classes and see what it is like. Yes, you have to take Calculus 3, but believe me. It’s not that bad and you won’t have to worry about using calculus in the real world because you don’t

I got a degree in mechanical engineering and did that for 13 years. I am burned out in that field and am going back to get another bachelor degree , in business this time.

I think it’s more useful to know how a business operates, and to learn about financing, accounting, a little management, and marketing and some business law. You learn so much more with a business degree. Engineering is one part of business, and a very important part. But it’s an increasingly frustrating field to be in these days. They want you to do the work of 10 engineers or your butt will be outsourced and it’s not very rewarding any more.

With a business degree i am hoping for a safer job, and to learn enough about business to open my own some day.

Business schools are often very competitive though, and you need to maintain good grades. An MBA would be ideal, and this is even MORE competitive. But if you’re smart enough and work at it, I think it’s a good field for a “jack of all trades”. Sure you’ll need to be good with numbers, but you won’t need Calculus 3. You will need to be well-rounded with common sense and the coursework will provide the additional formal training you’ll need.
