How difficult is it to transfer colleges?

I want to go to my hometown college for my freshman year so I can start college early (as well as barely pay anything for it due to a local scholarship), but after that I want to transfer to a bigger university that would be better fit for my major.

How difficult would it be to do that and do you think it’d be worth the hassle?

It wouldn’t be that difficult – you should do some leg-work first. You should find out what courses are required for college freshman (if any) at the bigger university. Then look for those similar courses at your hometown college. It is easy to transfer to another college – the bigger question is, what courses will transfer so I won’t have tons of electives. You want to transfer courses that will count. Some colleges have transfer guides already set up online.

Maybe you can even connect with an advisor at the bigger university to find out about required courses. Even though you are already thinking about your major, like I said before, the first question is, What does everyone have to take – liberal arts background? general sciences or mathematics? Then go to the local college to see what is offered – maybe meet with an advisor there, too.

This question can’t be answered in general terms because it depends on a lot of factors:

What specific colleges are we talking about?

What courses will you take and your GPA.

Do you have a compelling story to tell Big U’s admissions office?

Why didn’t you try financial aid at Big U?

What are the statistics for admitting transfers to Big U?

I think you should make an appointment with the dean of admissions at Big U. Tell her you really like Big U, but you are thinking of Small U for financial reasons, etc. Any high school kid that has the maturity to have a conversation with the dean will reflect much better than GPA or SAT scores. Who knows, you may even land some financial aid.
