How can I get a competitive edge in admissions to top schools?

So here’s my deal folks:

I slacked off in high school, and graduated with a cumulative 2.4 GPA, although I think I should point out that I had a 3.6 my senior year.

I enrolled in a local junior college last fall and have completed 30 units with a 3.9 GPA, with student gov’t experience and a few other extracurriculars.

Now here is my question: Are there any competitive statewide (California) or nationwide contests for scholars in college, either at the junior college or university level? Something like the National Merit Scholar for high school students? I did a search but came up with nothing. BTW, I’ve already been accepted into UC Berkeley for the spring semester, but I would love to get into Stanford, UPenn or Yale, and want to increase my chances. Also, would my bland high school record effect admission decisions?

I would appreciate any responses or advice. Thanks in advance.

GPA is always a big factor, but not the ONLY factor. Being involved at the high school/community college level in different activities, and/or groups is also a way to show admissions committees that you are dedicated and well-rounded. Being in ASB or a class officer, being involved in clubs, sports or performing groups is also a plus. Also, make sure that you state your future goals clearly so that colleges/universities see that you have focus (that means having a declared major). I hope this has been helpful.

a big name school looks VERY nice on a resume but so would a 3.6 GPA from BERKLEY or State University of New York at Albany (SUNY Albany) or any other school NOT in a big 10 SPORTS CONFERENCE or IVY LEAGUE CONFERENCE…..you could ALWAYS get your BA from Berkley and then do your GRADUATE work at Stamford or Yale or Harvard or wherever….. You would be getting the same quality education at Berkley that you would get at Stamford at HALF THE COST!!!!! there is NO shame in going to Berkley or a California State school or a NY State school or ANY state school—especially if you can graduate with a 3.5 or higher GPA… don’t worry about the bad high school GPA so much—you have proven yourself in Junior college–now keep it up at Berkley and like I said—finish at Berkley or a state school and do the graduate work at Stamford —or get your PhD at an ivy league or big 10 conference school. it would still get you a FANTASTIC JOB when you were finished… and you’d still get to put the IVY LEAGUE school on your resume right after the word Masters degree or PhD…… and you’d save a TON of money going to Berkley over an IVY LEAGUE school for your Bachelor Degree.

I don’t think that there is any such program for students at community college.

And I suggest that you just go to Berkeley. I think you risk losing a lot of that valuable transfer credit if you go to a really prestigious university. Thus, you may greatly prolong your time spent in college. Berkeley is well respected enough. And really, after you have gotten your first job, it isn’t going to matter what institution gave you your degree.
