Most college classes are three credits, but some are 4 and some are 1. So each grade has the numeric value from above, you multiply that grade by the number of credits that class is worth. Add up the values for each class and divide by the number of credits you took.
Lets say you took five classes each worth three credits and got an A, A-, two Bs, and a C+ then your GPA is calculated like this
(4.0*3) + (3.7*3) + (3.0*3) + (3.0*3)+(2.3*3)/15
12+11.1+9+9+6.6/15
47.7/15 = 3.18 GPA
A = 4.00
B = 3.00
C = 2.00
D = 1.00
Lets say you are taking 15 credits and have five classes. You get 2 A’s. 2 B’s, and 1 C.
Add up the earned points multipled by the credit per class (4*3+4*3+3*3+3*3+2*3) = 48 earned points
New divide the total earned points by the credits per semester
48/15 = 3.2
Add and divide by total
A=4
B=3
C=2
D=1
F=0
and then divide the result by the number of classes you’ve taken
