Home schooled, want to go to college now?

I am 22 years old, yeah I know I’m a little old for college, I decided at the age of 18 that it would be better to get married than go away to college…haha, who knows what I was thinking! LOL! Now I’ve finally decided that we’re going to be broke our whole lives if one of us doesn’t get a college degree. I have always wanted to do something in the medical field, I did go to school to become a Phlebotomist, and I am certified Phleb. but obviously, that doesn’t pay the bills. My next step is going to college. We are thinking about going up to Albany, to live, right now we are about an hr from there, and I am thinking about going to the Albany College of Pharmacy. Problem is, I was home schooled for almost my whole entire high school years, and I am just wondering if a college like ACP would accept me because I was home schooled, I did graduate and I do have a diploma, and my grades were pretty decent…any advice would be wonderful! thanks everyone!

First of all, you are not too old for college. Many people go later than the normal age, and for different reasons. Your time off seems to have sharpened your sense of what you want to major in, which is a good thing. I don’t think you’ll have a problem with admissions, as long as you write a good essay and have people who can write reference letters for you. Depending on the school’s requirements, you may or may not need to provide SAT/ACT scores. When appropriate, emphasize the maturity you’ve gained working in the real world and the independent, self-motivated personality you cultivated through your home school experience. It takes a self-driven person to succeed in home school, so I think the college would be more likely to accept you. Good luck!

I don’t know that particular college, but there’s no reason to doubt that they would accept your home school diploma. When you fill out the forms, you just name the school you went to. They may require some testing to place you in the correct classes, but they would do that for anyone if the program required it.

Homeschooling isn’t really the issue. It’s whether they like records from an accredited school, or whether you took the college entrance exams (ACT or SAT). Your program may have been accredited (curriculums for homeschool families frequently are). And you may have to take those tests at a local community college to get in. You’ll just have to go through channels, is all.

it would not matter. they would make you take CPT college placement test.

you can’t go to Pharmacy school directly. Pharmacy school has requirement like prerequisites

I think the best thing you should do is go to a community college. There you can take all of your prerequisites. . It would also help you go back in to school setting and CC is better then universities and cheaper then universities too and you might have a scholarship after you get you AA at a community college. If you already have you AA then you would just need Pharmacy school prerequisites.

They include

one year English

One year A&P with Labs

One year Calculus ( only till 2008, after 2008 they want Analytical Geometry with calculus applications one and two.)

so its better to take analytical geo)

One year biology

One year chemistry

one year organic chemistry

you might also want to check with an adviser because I remeber them but just to make sure.

After you take those classes you take PCATS then then apply to pharmacy school.

they would not look at your high school stuff just your CC transcripts. So if you have good GPA usually 3.6 or above and pcats score usually 25 or above you would be able to get in to pharmacy school no problem.

but you can’t just go to a pharmacy school and apply. you have to to have the pre- reqs before you can apply.

Good Luck…

Also some of the classes I mentioned above have pre reqs like for instance Analytical geometry one and two have to be taken after College Algebra, Pre calculus, Calculus.

but I think you should go to an adviser they give advise for free.

YOUR NOT TOO OLD. Did you read about that 95 year old lady who just got her masters in medical science. If she can do it anyone can do it….. She could barely walk but she aced her exams. =)

I know someone who was in a situation like yours and they were able to go to college. They had to take standardized tests (ACT or SAT), so you might have to do that.

It does look like ACP requires one of these tests. See Instructions for Early and Regular Decision here: http://www.acp.edu/admissions_freshinstructions.html

Shouldn’t any problem at all. You’ll need to take the SAT or ACT, whichever they require and satisfy their requirements there but home schooling wouldn’t, in itself, exclude you from most any school.
