Help with College Admission Essay..?

I’m writing my first college admissions essay to an art school and I don’t want to come across looking like an idiot. Are there websites out there with samples of other peoples work, just so I know how to gear mine? I would never concider using someone else’s essay, I am just lost for what a good one should look like. Thanks for your help!!

Well, I would be kind of hesitant about trying to model your essay on other people’s (and I don’t mean that I think you’re trying to cheat your way in). This essay needs to convey your voice, and explain why you would be a good addition to their college. You should write in a way that is comfortable to you, and that lets your voice come across. You may see some great essays by other people, but if you try to make yours like that, it might not come out as good, because it’s not you talking. Do you see what I mean? You can look at some tips about college essays here:

Best of luck!

Look at the college’s site on the page with the essay prompts (topics). Write a couple of samples for friends, colleagues and teachers to read. Have them give you feedback.

An art school will want to know about you — your influences, motivations, projects, style, — and to be original that can’t be just like anyone else’s essay. It has to be YOU.

Stop, drop and roll.

First, this is an Art School, and while they’re most assuredly looking for intelligent students that can write and express themselves, they want to see that you are passionate about your field of study.

So, my advice to you would be to follow the standard essay format, make sure you illustrate to them how much you want to go to their school, what your plans are for your field of study and how much love you have for what it is you’re trying to study.

Make sure you use spell check too. Not to be mean, but it’s ‘consider’ not ‘concider’. They will definitely look at things like that.

Most importantly, make sure you’re not going to Art School because you thinks its an easy way out, or because people looked at the doodles you did in your notebook and told you that you’re a great artist.

Art School is where you’re going to truly find out what it is your made out of, what slant and voice your artwork will take, and more importantly the type of artist and person you plan on being for the rest of your life.

If you have “free reign” as to a topic they require you to write about, why not just write about your passion for art? The best essays are ones that are true and expressive. Everyone can write a good essay when they are writing about something they enjoy or have an interest in. Good luck!

Usually just a general writing sample about anything, but make sure it’s your best writing. Have an English teacher approve it. I’d say no more than two pages.
