No questions are too strange at this point in your life. You are going through some major transitions. As far as notebooks, use whatever you are comfortable with. Unlike in high school, no one will look down on you for using something that is less than trendy. The only thing to keep in mind is that you probably won’t have all your classes on one day, so why carry everything around all the time? If you plan to live on campus, separate notebooks would probably work best. If you will be a commuter, you might actually want access to everything so that you can study between classes.

Don’t buy any supplies like calculators for class unless you have been specifically told to do so or you know from others who have taken that class that it will be needed. If your professor wants you to have a specific type of calculator, you will be told exactly what to get. You don’t want to buy something, only to find out you need another, different one.

If your Pell grant covers expenses beyond tuition, you can use it for whatever you need it for. If you want a hoodie, buy a hoodie. It is obviously money you would not then have available for other things, but my guess is that you need some clothes anyway, so why not a university hoodie?

Relax, calm down. You have nothing to be nervous about. Don’t let anyone or anything intimidate you or make you doubt yourself… that’s the key to success in college. College is a big step for anyone, but it’s one that you should embrace and not fret over because it’s so fun and it ends really quickly (at time it seems like it)! The money that you received from a pell grant can be used to purchase a university hoodie and any other school supplies or items that you wish to purchase. I would suggest only buying a graphing calculator if you are taking heavy science or math courses. For most basic college-level math courses, a regular calculator or TI-30 calculator will do just fine.

As for using a notebook for each class… that’s totally up to you. Most professors don’t particularly care how you organize or write your notes, just as long as you write sufficient notes that will allow you turn in high quality work. I personally buy 5 or 6 seperate small poly binders for each class, a couple of packets of loose leaf paper, some pens and highlighters and it works for me. All professors give out syllabus, some professors give out handouts or assign readings, and it really helps if you have a binder or at least a good sturdy folder to put these handouts in. Best of luck. Get out and dance or treat yourself to a relaxing activity before the first day of class. It has always helped me.

nervous….maybe a little bit. I would suggest buying only the basic things you need for school so you don’t end up like millions of others (myself included) that bought many unnecessary stuff just to find them useless.

Graphing calculator will only be good for calculus, a notebook for each class is a good idea, and I don’t know what Pell grant covers. Actually I think you can ask them to charge the hoodie to your account because grants and other financial aid usually cover them that way.

Hope this helps

you’re just nervous.. those are all common questions.. i didnt know anything when i first went.. but i figured it all out on my own.. this is your chance to do the same.. just ask questions.. as far as the taking notes thing goes.. whatever you did in highschool will probably work fine.. i had a notebook for each class but i wasnt an avid note taker unless the class called for me to be one.. some classes i filled up a note book, others i never even used a page… dont know much about the pell grant or anything having to do with financial aid.. try your best to understand that stuff.. i never could so i told my mom to take care of it and send me the bill.. college is a blast.. everyone enjoys it.. 10 times better than your last year of highschool..

You will probably need notebooks for each class in order to take notes unless you are bringing your laptop to EVERY class. Get a binder and put the notebooks in it so that they are organised. Are you taking math classes? If so you will probably want a graphing calculator, you can domore with them than scientific calculators. As for the hoodie… I wouldn’t use loan money for that and I don’t even think you can. It would be a question to ask the financial aid office.

Don’t worry, you will sort everything out little by little when in college. You’ll get all information you need. You will be able to ask your advisor or mentor of anything.

I don’t think there was anyone more scared going to uni than I was (I hated studying, I am in another country and I am 3 yrs older than everyone else). In two years now, I cannot wait it to start and I’m really scared that it’s only one year left until I finish and I will have to leave so soon!!!

Don’t be scared! Everyone will come with the same knowledge and feeling the same way you do πŸ˜‰

I teach a college class. Wait until each teacher tells you what is needed in the class. The books, etc., will be very expensive. Wait until around Christmas break to buy the hoodie–they often have a big sale around that time in college bookstores.
