I think it is the GPA that the college is considering. If you apply early decision or early action, it will be your cumulative GPA of your Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior years. If you apply later, the GPA will also include the first semester of your senior year.

And I don’t think there is a mandatory GPA to get into college (3.7 is a little high–schools can have minimum GPA requirements, but I don’t think they are this high). Perhaps that is the average GPA of the accpeted applicants.

It is cumulative over your four years in high school. When your application is reviewed, admissions committies look at your transcripts which show the classes you have taken, grades etc.. Colleges also take into consideration the high school where you are coming from, extra curricular activities and level of classes taken. For example someone coming from a very rich town with superior schools would have a better chance of getting into a good school not being in the top five or ten percdnt of their class becasue of the level of education the school provides. It does not mean if you have an excellent high school education, you will get into Harvard if you are ranked 99 out of 100 graduating students.

This is an overall GPA for the four years of high school (although of course you apply before graduating, so it would be a cumulative GPA up to the time you apply).

I think it means 3.7 average of GPA from all years in school (high school). (Sometimes it is marked by GPAX).

it is cumulative, but each year gets progressively more important for colleges. Colleges don’t care that much about Freshman year because you are younger and more immature, but they care a lot about Junior year because that is closest to what you will be in college. Sophmore year is somewhere in between in how much colleges care abou.
