-Make friends (or at least be on good terms) with your RA/CA.

-Don’t be the loud neighbor who always has their music blaring.

-Unless you’re sleeping/changing clothes/really trying to concentrate, leave the door to your dorm room open so that people can stop in and say hi.

-Join a club/student organization to meet people.

-Make friends with at least one person in every class you take so that if you miss class because you’re sick/hungover/didn’t feel like going/etc. you can still get the notes.

-Don’t overwhelm yourself with classes each semester…college isn’t just about studying.

-Make sure you have sandals for the showers and a plastic basket to carry all your shower stuff in.

-Make a homemade meal every once in a while. (My friends and I planned a big themed dinner every month my freshman year.)

-Don’t be afraid to ask for help in a class.

-Visit your professor during his or her office hours even if you don’t have a question about the material.

-If you’re going to drink, don’t do it in the dorms.

-Loft your bed because dorm rooms are TINY!!!! And at least this way you have a little more room.

-Don’t live with a friend…it can ruin the friendship.

-Find out if other people from your high school are going to be there so that you’ll at least know someone there.

-Email if you have anymore questions! 🙂

Good luck!

A lot of these are assuming you’ll be living on campus…

Join a club or two that interests you, but don’t overload yourself the first semester.

Time management. Write down study times and stick to them. The key isn’t to study too much or party too much…it’s to find a good balance of the two. That will make for an amazing college experience.

Make time to sleep. You’ll understand that better when school starts.

Don’t overload on pizza and junk food in the dining hall. Or if you do, take advantage of your free membership to your school’s fitness center (if you have one). Skip dessert, so you can drink beer. Or just have both for dinner. You only live once!

Meet everyone you can.

Don’t worry too much about a major right now if you’re undecided. Just let college life sink in for a semester. Then start planning the rest of your life.

Keep your eyes and mind open. Change and new ideas are everywhere!

The day before classes start, break out your campus map and schedule and find out where your classes are. Map a route from class to class so you’re not stumbling in 15 minutes late because you got lost.

Embrace your independence and freedom, but don’t let it intoxicate you too much. A failing grade and having to move back in with the parents is not ideal. You will not like it. Work hard AND play hard!

Love it, cherish it, take so many pictures. College is such an experience. Make it the best!

One of the biggest mistakes Freshmen make going in is loading up their schedule so tight they have no room to breath. I suggest taking a lighter load your first year so you have time to enjoy college and set you up for a good experience. Leave all the harder courses until your Sophmore and Senior years. If you are constantly stressed it will do you no good. College is suppose to be a fun and exciting time. This doesn’t mean partying and so on, but having some fun is ok. Keeping your feet grounded and make the learning a fun experience.

Meet new people try to stay away from the ones you know from high school. Once you move out of the dorms and into an apartment try to rent from a good land lord. Make sure you sign an agreement with ur roomates stating you each will be responsible for your share and only your share of bills/rent etc. They might be ur best fried at the beginning of the year but when push comes to shove you dont want to be stuck with the bill.

Get involved! Find as many groups, clubs, friends you can because even if there’s a million things you try and end up hating, the chances that you’ll find more things you enjoy is greater if you try more things. Also, take classes you want to take because you want to learn about whatever you have to, don’t go into a major because it makes the most money or is the sexiest. Try to be as outgoing as possible and if everyone else seems shy then try to make the first move!

See if there are any other student from your high school that will be going to the same college, and hook up with them. School is not so frightening if you know someone at the school, you can give each other moral support, and form study groups.

Most colleges will have a freshman day where they kind of show you the ropes. You’ll also meet other freshman that day. Don’t miss it!
