Going to College?
I’m headed to college at the end of this month, and I don’t know if I have everything I’ll need. If someone could tell from experience what some valuable things to have in a dorm are would they please let me know?

Ok, so make sure to have some flip-flops that you can wear in the shower (I know I needed them in my dorm) and a robe to get from the bathroom to your room without any problems. Try to get lots of storage devices (especially some that will fit under your bed or in your closet). Those rooms seem big when they are empty, but they fill up super fast. I would also bring either a small vacuum or a dust buster, because a real vacuum takes up too much room. I also had a wooden bunk bed frame that my roommate and I used every year to help save some room too. You might want to think about an area rug or some sort, because most dorm rooms are not carpeted. A towel rack or shoe rack that can hang from your door might be convenient too, unless you get a full length mirror to hang from your door (also a good idea). As far as food appliances, you might want to check with your school because my school would not allow you to have microwaves or other food appliances in your room, other than a mini fridge (which is totally needed). I did have a toaster that I smuggled into my dorm room and a mini crock pot, which came in handy for all sorts of things. I also got a new pair of slippers each year so I could roam from room to room without actually putting on shoes. Other than that, I think that might be it besides clothes, bedding, toiletries, and pictures and picture frames. Oh, make sure to get some sort of shower caddy. Mine was a cute blue basket that I carried my shampoo and whatnot in to the shower with me. It makes things easier. I hope this helps!

I’m going into my senior year, and I’m still figuring it out. I would say make sure you have a fridge and a microwave (either you or your room mate). Shower sandals because the common showers get pretty bad. Some paper towels, Toilet paper, 2-3 towels and 2-3 sets of sheets (you don’t want to be washing them constantly). A hamper for clothes. Make sure one of you has an iron. Extra pillows so you can prop yourself up to read in bed. A comfortable matress pad, or eggshell matress cover (the beds are awful). An alarm clock, some posters and things to decorate (the dorms are pretty dreary). Make sure you have a trash can for the room, maybe a reading light. Paper plates, cups, and napkins you can get up there but are also good to have around (ordering pizza or leftovers from dinner). Asprin and Tums are good to have whether you will be going out or just adjusting to the college food. This is going to be really corny, but most importantly bring a positive outlook, because the first couple weeks everyone is looking to make friends, so be open to all the opportunities to meet people and join organizations. Have fun and good luck.

Lived in a dorm for a while before I moved out but what i found that i forgot was bedsheets and pillowcases, definitely get couple of spare ones coz the ones provided look very suspicious. Also necessities like toothpaste and etc. If your on a sharing the room with another, then usually it’s a hassle coz u can’t share everything even if you want…but mostly it’s up to the university how they control the dorms. if it’s a well reputed college, then usually the dorms are in good condition (Taylor’s and Monash, for eg)

yeah, definitely some bed risers and egg crates for the mattress. trust me, the beds are mighty uncomfortable. storage bins for food and clothes, maybe even some plastic shelving. a tv, microwave, and fridge are always nice. a fan! an electrical strip so you have more outlets. a lamp, and maybe some festive lights to help spice up the room. posters and lots of pictures! everyone loves pictures. coat hangers and a shoe storage thing. lots of those plastic hooks made by 3M that you can put up on walls and take down at the end of the year. those are nice for hanging up jackets and sweatshirts or wet clothes. then you basic pens and paper and crap. a rug is nice, and slippers! shower flip-flops and a robe if you like. um… then the basic shower necessities and all. good luck!!!

the most important thing to bring is an open mind
then comes underbed storage boxes and bed risers
to figure out what else you’ll need, go though your typical day and think of everything you use. I found that helped me remember things I needed. A good mattress pad, bedside light, and a fan (if your dorm isn’t air-conditioned) are also must-haves.

A microwave and mini fridge are crucial…make sure you or your roommate have one. Also, a desk lamp in case your roommate likes to go to bed early and you stay up late – even though it still will light up the room, it is nowhere near as bad as the overhead lights.
Finally, LOFTS! They open up so much space that would be taken up by bunk beds. If your college doesn’t allow lofts, bunk the beds…in a dorm room, making your room comfortable is all about opening up space/making efficient use of space.

I could almost guarantee that you aren’t going to Arkansas Tech University, but on their website, they have a list of things that they believe their students might need…

It’ll at least give you some ideas…
