Fraternity Brothers, i need ur opinion….choosing the right fraternity..or should i join one?

ive been introduced into fraternities offered in my campus and im curious about joining..My problem:Pledging..since ive been doing some research about it, mostly all of the fraternities have information about brotherhood, integrity, community service and all discipline..but is it really worth it? im just worried about what the upperclassmen would do if i pledge.and i know that every campus has its own ways of doing it..

should i join? what other advice can u guys give me?

You join a fraternity for two reason:

1) You and the frat share the same ideological feelings

2) They think of you as a real brother and not just some dink

Do your research.

Talk to current members, ask current members for the phone number of alumni members, do online research.

Depending on the organization, their focus and programs, and how well they fit to your own ideas/ideals will be the most important factor.

If you join a fraternity, you will be immersed/indoctrinated – if the principles of the organization are not something you already agree with, it will clash with your current principles…and will not be a good experience.

I would only add this: Once you are in a fraternity, it will either hang around your neck as a beautiful medal of yours and the fraternity’s achievements or will be a dark stone that weighs you down…both of these things are possible, and once worn, it will be worn for the rest of your life.

My husband joined a fraternity many years ago. He is still very close to his fraternity brothers. I was a Little Sister of the same fraternity, and I still IM my sponsor–20 years later.

The friendships you make in a fraternity are extremely long-lasting and deep. Just make sure that you are a good fit for that fraternity–that’s what the pledging period is for.

Yes, there is a ‘partying’ stigma attached to Greek organizations but ultimately they are a great way to meet new people and become involved with your college community. Also, being involved in an organization such as a Sorority/Fraternity looks great on job applications. Most people do not join Greek organizations solely to party.

You could have stayed home if you wanted to drink heavily and be humiliated. Several years after you graduate, you’ll look back at your university years and wish you’d met a more diverse crowd of friends, focused more on your studies and grades, and not subjected yourself to that kind of enforced conformity. Skip it, and be friends with people who like you for who you are, not because you begged them to let you into their club.
