The most common answer would be to get teaching certificates and teach middle or high school English. If you go on to get your masters then you can teach on the college level. Another option that most people overlook is teaching English as a second language. I have a few friends who are teaching it over in Japan and they didn’t know any Japanese before going over there.

If you don’t want Journalism but still want to write, take a look into creative writing programs. There isn’t much you can do with the degree (I’m speaking from personal experience on that one) but it helps out your writing skills in other areas which is always worth while.

A lot will say an editor or writer but in truth, a lot of English majors end up working in dead end jobs. English as a whole is a useless degree unless you have connections and really know what you want to do with it.

Writing and editing for magazines or newspapers often requires a Journalism degree as does work in broadcast or radio. And writing itself is a very competitive, talent-based field where most writers have second jobs to get by.

I suggest you research careers in English and consider what interests you. It will help a lot more than what others here can tell you.

EDIT:

Nice. You pea-brains give me a thumbs down for being honest.

I think an English degree is actually one of the most flexible degrees you can have.

English teaches you to write well, and to comprehend well. It also shows you how to approach symbolism, and to use metaphors and analogies to help others understand complex ideas.

GREAT careers that use skills like these are: Marketing, advertising, political activism (speech writing, and policy development), and — in my case — human resources / organization development and internal communication. All businesses need people who know how to write — and, believe me, not many young people entering the workforce today can write very well at all!

I majored in English because I loved to read; I came away with a greater appreciation of poetry, theatre, and social commentary. 25 years later, I am very glad about my English degree!

You will have to take several English classes in college regardless of what your major will be. You don’t have to major in things like journalism or English or creative writing or education to take English courses.

My best friend is an english major and plans to go into teaching and writing free lance.

you can also become an editor, or even go into the publishing business if you get enough experience in that field.

you can also get into Lit. analysis or writing major publications for non-literature companies (writing instruction manuels or software explanations) if you understand the technology.

You can use it to teach English – which was my original plan.

I have an English degree. I write training materials and am working on a novel.
